History Of the Foundation
Founded by Edmontonians of Austrian heritage, the Johann Strauss Foundation has aimed to support advanced musical education of residents of Alberta, since its inception in 1975. The Foundation encourages and supports young musicians through scholarships, helping these young and talented musicians to further their musical studies in the rich cultural environment of Austria.
Since 1975 the Foundation has awarded over 190 scholarships, grants and awards in excess of $1Million to young musicians as well as groups such as Opera NUOVA and the University of Alberta’s Academy String Orchestra. The Johann Strauss Foundation endow, which supports the scholarship through its investment income is being administered by our collaborator, the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies since 2009.
The Johann Strauss Foundation is delighted and proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year and hopes to meet many of our winners at an event in fall of 2025.
